Galenus Gastprofessur Kopenhagen (11. bis 30. August 2025)

Unter dem Thema „Design of a solid self-emulsifying drug delivery system“ steht die dreiwöchige Galenus Gastprofessur von Prof. Dr. Jörg Huwyler, Vorstand des Instituts für Pharmazeutische Technologie und Biopharmazie der Universität Basel, am Department of Pharmacy der Universität Kopenhagen, das von seinem Gastgeber, Prof. Dr. Dr.hc. Thomas Rades, als Forschungsleiter geführt wird. Geplant ist auch ein Mini-Symposium, an dem Prof. Line Hagner-Nielsen vom Department of Health Technology, Drug Delivery and Sensing der Universität Kopenhagen teilnehmen wird.

In August 2025, Prof. Jörg Huwyler, through a grant by the Galenus Foundation, had the opportunity to visit the University of Copenhagen to join the research team of Prof. Thomas Rades at the Department of Pharmacy. During this stay, Prof. Huwyler presented latest results from research projects carried out at the University of Basel at a symposium supported by the Galenus Foundation and at the Nordic POP meeting (NordicPop is a nordic countries university hub). His lecture on the design, evaluation, and application of a new pharmaceutical excipient was very well received and sparked a lively and fruitful discussion. This new excipient consists of calcium-phosphate microcapsules, which can be loaded with drug molecules of choice and which subsequently can be used for the preparation of patient-friendly orally dispersible dosage forms. In addition, drug dissolution and oral bioavailabiliy are enhanced due to stabilization of the API in an amorphous form within the drug carrier. Mechanistic studies were initiated during the stay of Prof. Huwyler in Copenhagen to study this phenomenon. With the help of two Erasmus funded students, Mrs. Niebel and Schwarz, pilot experiments were carried out, which led to new insights and which serve as a starting point for continued research by Masters students from Copenagen, and a joint major grant application in collaboration with Assoc.Prof. Inês Martins. The generous support of the Galenus Foundation was instrumental to initiate and carry out this interesting project. The exciting and fruitful collaboration between the Universities of Copenhagen and Basel will be the starting point for new joint projects to explore open questions in the field of Pharmaceutical Technology.
